Gender for kids

So Pear (who currently has no internet, by the way, but they should be back soon) and I were chatting yesterday about how one would raise a child without gendering the child.  Like, if you used a gender-neutral pronoun, even one like ‘they’ that’s kind of vague and doesn’t necessarily imply someone is non-binary but could just mean you don’t know — would that leave it more open for the child to identify as whatever, or would you just be steering the child down a genderqueer path in the same way children are steered toward maleness or femaleness by ‘he’ or ‘she’?  Is there any way to not make a choice or is this one of those situations where every possibility is a positive choice?

We thought there were probably people already trying to raise children like this, even if only a few and probably with children too young to say what the outcome was.  But does anyone know of any specific examples?

#No we are not having a baby.  #It was just an interesting abstract conversation.
